Redeem OfferWe are all about backyard composting! We design and market Speedibins, the metal composter built to keep out rats. Fear of rats is a main reason that people don’t compost at home. Speedibins remove that hurdle. “Backyard composting is arguably the single most effective activity that individuals can do to help the environment.” Compost removes organic matter from the dump, where it produces methane, and instead feeds soil microbes that feed the plants that feed us.
Speedibins have a large lid to allow easy addition of fresh material and turning, a 1/4 inch mesh metal bottom screen, and a front door that slides out for easy removal of compost.
A family business, the Speedibin company, Fresh Earth Products, is owned by Joyce and Paul McMenamon in Merville BC. It was started by Joyce’s Dad, Fred Francis, in Victoria BC in 1989. Fred saw a need for a composter that would keep out rats. He designed them of sheet metal but the business did not continue as the cheaper plastic bins were flooding the market at that time. Then in 2011, City Farmer asked if we would make them again to fight the rat problem in Vancouver. Joyce’s Dad had passed but she found his old drawings and started tweaking from there. Now we have a product that gardeners love!
As Joyce’s Dad said in 1992, “Gardening and composting are happy activities, available to all ages. They encourage fresh potatoes rather than couch potatoes and help promote physical and mental health in their practitioners. A nation of more self-sufficient individuals is less vulnerable to disasters. Even small garden and composting activities are steps towards a better world.”
